Pune, Jul 3 (PTI) An under-trial prisoner was injured grievously after he was hit with a stone in a retaliatory attack in the Yerawada Central Prison here Wednesday, police said.
Pune police registered a case of attempt to murder against six other under-trial prisoners following the incident.
Mohammad Nadaf was hit with a stone outside his barrack Wednesday morning.
A senior jail official said it was the fall-out of attack on Tushar Hambhir, another under-trial prisoner and member of the right-wing outfit Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS), Tuesday.
Three inmates, identified as Shahrukh alias Rashid Shaikh, Aman Riyaz Ansari and Salim Shaikh had allegedly attacked Hambhir.
"The accused who attacked Nadaf thought that Nadaf, who is facing charges under the MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act), was behind the attack on Hambhir," said the official.
Nadaf was admitted to government-run Sassoon General Hospital where his condition was said to be critical.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Shivaji Pawar, who visited the jail Wednesday, too said that the attack on Nadaf was apparently a retaliation for Tuesday's attack on Hambhir, but added that those who allegedly attacked Nadaf were not associated with the HRS.
He identified them as Ganesh Masurkar, Dipak Patil, Shwetang Nikalaje, Mangesh Kuditkar, Ajay Kudale and Tushar Gogawale.
"They concluded that Nadaf was behind the attack on Hambhir, but this needs to be investigated as they were arrested in different cases and lodged in different barracks," he said.
The six were arrested Wednesday under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder), ACP Pawar said, adding that police will obtain their custody for further probe.
On Tuesday morning, Hambhir was attacked with a nail- like sharpened object. Yerawada police arrested Shahrukh Shaikh, Ansari and Salim Shaikh for allegedly attacking Hambhir.
Twenty-three prisoners were shifted to Kolhapur jail after Tuesday's incident.
