The Tata Nexon has officially regained its position as India’s best-selling SUV and utility vehicle (UV) for the 2026 fiscal year (FY2026), according to the latest wholesale data. Recording a milestone of 216,054 units, the compact SUV climbed from its sixth-place ranking in FY2025 to overtake its sibling, the Tata Punch, and successfully fend off its closest rival, the Hyundai Creta.
This performance marks the fourth time the Nexon has secured the top spot in the Indian UV market, having previously led from FY2022 through FY2024. The model accounted for 34% of Tata Motors’ total passenger vehicle sales this fiscal, supported by its diverse range of petrol, diesel, electric and CNG powertrains. Tata Nexon Market Drivers and Price Reduction Impact
A primary catalyst for the Nexon’s resurgence was the "GST 2.0 rationalisation" implemented in late September 2025, which led to a significant price drop for compact SUVs. This policy shift triggered a 41% surge in demand during the second half of the fiscal year. Between October 2025 and February 2026, the Nexon frequently topped the charts as India's best-selling passenger vehicle, achieving cumulative sales of one million units since its 2017 debut.
While the Nexon took the overall crown, the Hyundai Creta maintained its position as India’s best-selling midsize SUV. The Creta recorded its highest-ever fiscal sales of 201,921 units, up 4% year-on-year, and remained the second-highest selling UV in the country.
Tata Nexon Competitive Landscape and Segment Shifts
The broader utility vehicle segment saw notable shifts in the top five rankings. The Maruti Ertiga secured the third spot with 198,855 units, rising four ranks from the previous year. In contrast, the Tata Punch last year's leader slipped to fourth place with 183,980 units. Analysts suggest this dip was temporary, as consumers delayed purchases ahead of the new facelifted internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric (EV) variants launched in early 2026.
Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza rounded out the top five with 180,104 units. Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra saw a strong performance from its Scorpio range (Scorpio N and Classic) and a massive 49% growth in Thar brand sales, driven primarily by the introduction of the five-door Thar Roxx.
Tata Nexon New Launches and Market Competition
The latter half of the fiscal year saw several high-impact launches that reshaped the top 20 list. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder jumped five ranks to 14th place, following a 65% sales increase. Additionally, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, a new midsize SUV launched in September 2025, made an immediate impact by entering the top 20 list with 75,611 units sold in just seven months. Kia also maintained a strong presence with the Sonet, which outsold the Seltos for the second consecutive year. The Kia Carens MPV saw a 25% demand increase following the introduction of the Clavis and Clavis EV siblings. These shifts highlight a highly competitive market where tax rationalisation and frequent product refreshes continue to shape consumer preferences.
