Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao play the leads in this week's Fanney Khan. Aishwarya and Anil have earlier worked in movies like Taal and Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, and it's more than a decade that they are reuniting for a movie. Fanney Khan is directed by Atul Manjekar and produced by Anil Kapoor and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehta. Our in-house critic Sreeju Sudhakaran is watching Fanney Khan right now and here's his first impression of the movie,
"Prashant Kumar, or as his friends call him, Fanney Khan, dreams of being a singer, but his ambitions never work out. So he tried to work it out through his daughter, Lata, named after, of course. Lata too, when she grows up, aspires to be a singing diva a la her idol, Baby Singh, but she gets fat-shamed at the auditions. Trying to make money to cut a single for her, Prashant kidnaps Baby, with the help of his goofy friend, Adhir.
It has been some time that we have seen in Anil Kapoor in a proper lead role, so Fanney Khan was much anticipated. The never-aging star is on fine form here, even though some of the actions of his character never makes sense. Rajkummar Rao is glad to play supporting foil to Kapoor. Rai doesn't have much to do in the first half. Apart from Kapy, it's Pihu Sand who makes the most impression. Her character, though, feels very poorly written.
The first half of Fanney Khan has some good moments, though there is no standout scene. Even the whole kidnapping plot feels out of the blue. The movie reached mid-point when Khan completely embraces the idea of being a kidnapper for the sake of his daughter. Hope this leads to more exciting scenes in the second half."
This is just the review of the first half. So watch this space for the complete review of Fanney Khan.
