Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grandest (and most controversial) movie till date, Padmaavat is finally reaping benefits. Set in the 13th century, the period-drama revolving around Rani Padmini’s beauty and valour struck a chord with audiences. Since its worldwide release on January 25, 2018, Padmaavat’s domestic box office collection on Day 5 stands at Rs 129 crore. What makes these box office figures of Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh-starrer special is that it passed the tough Monday test. The film collected Rs 15 crore on its first Monday setting the tone of its second week.

Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter sharing the deets on Padmaavat’s earnings. He wrote, ‘#Padmaavat passes the crucial ‘Monday test’... Maintains the momentum... Collects a SOLID figure… Wed [limited previews] 5 cr, Thu 19 cr, Fri 32 cr, Sat 27 cr, Sun 31 cr, Mon 15 cr. Total: ₹ 129 cr. Meanwhile, according to Boxofficeindia.com, SLB’s magnum opus has also set the cash registers ringing at the overseas box office. With USD 11.60 million (nearly Rs 74 crore), it has recorded the highest opening weekend for a Bollywood film. The film made on a lavish budget of Rs 200 crore has earned more than half the revenue in five days plus all the commotion and never-ending controversies (thanks to mischief-mongers like Karni Sena, pseudo-feminists like Swara Bhaskar and the list can continue.) Swara Bhaskar Gets Her 2 Minutes of Fame: Shahid Kapoor, Rohit Shetty Rebuke Her Uncalled-for Attention.

Padmaavat is not just on its way to becoming a commercial success but has also drawn positive critical response especially for performances by its lead actors. Though critics have pointed out chinks in Bhansali’s screenplay, the acting brilliance on parts of Ranveer, Deepika and Shahid neutralize the negative factor. Everyone associated with the film would be breathing a sigh of relief seeing the response Padmaavat has received on its release. After facing hurdles after hurdles, it is time for them to sit back and see the film go places.
