Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single-largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections, winning 108 seats. After several days of negotiations, Vijay secured the support of key allies, including the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, to reach the 120-seat mark, surpassing the majority requirement of 118 in the 234-member House.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office to Vijay and nine other ministers from the TVK. In his address, Vijay promised a "new era" of secular and social justice, emphasising transparent governance and a corruption-free administration.
