New Delhi, Sep 19: After much delay, the Supreme Court on Monday announced the dates for filing the claims and objections with regard to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. According to a tweet by ANI, a division bench, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi informed that the filing of claims and objections will start from September 25 and would be open for a period of 60 days, till November 25.

On September 5, the Apex Court had deferred the commencement of the process of receiving claims and objections for the NRC in Assam till further orders. A bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman perused the report of NRC coordinator Pratik Hajela in which he said that 10 out of 15 documents provided in list A can be relied upon by a claimant for staking claim in the state's list of citizens.

The final draft NRC list was published on July 30 in which names of 2.89 crore of the 3.29 crore people were included. Reports inform that the names of 40,70,707 people did not figure in the list. Of these, 37,59,630 names have been rejected and the remaining 2,48,077 are on hold.

Terming the issue as "human problem with great magnitude", the Supreme Cpurt had asked the state NRC coordinator to submit a report in a sealed cover on the ramification of allowing the claimants to file new sets of legacy documents. On August 28, the Supreme Court had said that it could consider a re-verification of 10 per cent of the people who were recently included in Assam's draft NRC. It had said that this exercise could be carried out by an independent team.

Earlier this week, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured that no Indian national would be excluded from the list and urging people not to be afraid to regarding the NRC draft. "Every person living in North-East wants that there should be a list on who is a foreigner and who belongs to this country. That is why you have seen how Assam recently saw the NRC draft. There have been a few complaints regarding that too. But, whatever is happening is under the supervision of the Supreme Court," Singh had said.
