Beed, July 11: In a shocking incident from Maharashtra’s Beed district, a newborn declared dead by doctors was found alive 12 hours later — just moments before being buried by the grieving family. Doctors claim ‘Lazarus syndrome' in combination with ‘suspended animation' can be an explanation.

Balika Ghuge delivered a baby at Swami Ramanand Teerth Government Hospital on the night of July 7. Doctors declared the newborn dead immediately after delivery and handed over the body to the family the next day. The infant remained at the hospital for 12 hours before being released for burial.

As per local tradition, the baby’s grandfather, Sakharam Ghuge, carried the infant in a bag on his motorcycle to their village. Just before the burial, the baby’s grandmother insisted on seeing the child’s face one last time. Upon unwrapping the cloth, the family was stunned to see the baby move.

“We were overjoyed,” said Sakharam. The baby was immediately rushed to the Ambajogai Government Hospital and later shifted back to Swami Teerth Rural Hospital. The infant’s mother alleged serious negligence by hospital staff. “Even at midnight, we noticed the baby moving and told the nurse, but she insisted he was dead,” she claimed, reported India TodayNewborn Killed in Bengaluru: Baby Found Dead in Water Tank, Murder Investigation Underway.

Hospital acting administrator Rajesh Kachre confirmed the formation of an inquiry committee to investigate. “A detailed probe is underway. Action will be taken against those responsible once the report is submitted,” Kachre said.

Dr Shankar Dhapate, the dean of Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Govt Medical College and Hospital, described the incident as an extremely rare case of Lazarus syndrome combined with suspended animation.

What Is Lazarus Syndrome?

Lazarus syndrome, or autoresuscitation, is a rare medical phenomenon where spontaneous return of circulation occurs after cardiac arrest and cessation of CPR. Named after the biblical figure Lazarus, it can appear as revival from death. Experts believe it may result from dislodged plaque restoring blood flow to the heart.

The incident has sparked outrage over hospital accountability and neonatal care in rural Maharashtra, raising urgent questions about medical oversight and staff training in government-run facilities.
