Pune, September 2: In the latest development in Bhima Koregaon Violence case, the Pune Sessions court will hear the bail application of accused Surendra Gadling and Shoma Sen's bail application on September 6. The application for shifting them from Yerwada jail to any other jail will also be heard along with the bail plea on the same day.

According to reports, the application to shift the accused was moved by jail authorities. They have mentioned overcrowding and security issues in Yerwada Jail as the reasons for the transfer of the accused. Earlier in the day, the court has granted a 90-day extension to Pune Police to file chargesheet in a case registered against five accused Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut, Sudhir Dhawale and Rona Wilson in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence which took place on January 1, this year.

The police arrested the activists on June 6 and booked them under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The accused organised the Elgar Parishad on December 31-January 1 in Bhima-Koregaon, which led to violent clashes between a section of Dalit and Maratha communities. Five more activists were arrested on August 28 in raids which were conducted across five states.

The Police claimed that the activists have links with Naxals and were planning ‘Rajiv Gandhi like assassination’ to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The activists arrested on August 28 are lawyer and trade union activist Sudha Bhardwaj, poet P Varavara Rao, activist Gautam Navlakha, and lawyers Arun Pereira and Vernon Gonsalves.
