New Delhi, November 9: Delhi on Sunday recorded its biggest single-day spike of 7,745 COVID-19 cases. The positivity rate in the national capital rose to 15.26 percent amid festive season and rising pollution level, the health department said. In the wake of the rising coronavirus cases, Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said that the sudden surge in the cases is as many people ate not wearing face masks. He added that most cases are from working class and as per experts the peak can last for more 5 days.

"It seems Delhi COVID-19 cases are at peak now and experts say it can last for 4-5 days. Delhi's overall death ratio is 1.59%. Many people aren't wearing masks. Most cases are from working class. We've increased 110 ICU beds in govt hospitals, Jain said. The COVID-19 tally in Delhi rose to 4,38,529 with as many as 41,857 active cases in the city. With 71 more fatalities, the death toll to 6,989. On Saturday,  Delhi had reported 79 deaths, the highest in over four months. India Reports 45,903 New Coronavirus Cases in Past 24 Hours, COVID-19 Count Surges to 85,53,658.

While speaking on MCD employees going on indefinite strike from today, Jain took a dig at MCD mayors and said it is beyond his understanding how MCD mayors pay salaries of employees, whenever there's a strike. "This shows they've money. In my view, they are planning this all & doing it deliberately", he said.
