Chennai, November 13: Cyclone Gaja is expected to make a landfall along the coast of Tamil Nadu on November 15. In the wake of the changing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry from the night of November 14. The heavy downpour will be accompanied with strong winds blowing at a speed of 80-100 kmph speed.

On November 15, the rainfall intensity will increase gradually at most places and it will be heavy to very heavy at a few places and extremely heavy (above 20 cm) at isolated places over north Tamil Nadu. According to details by Director, Met Dept, Chennai, on Tuesday, Cyclone Gaja is lying about 790 km northeast of Nagapattinam. It is expected to move in south-southwest direction and cross between Pamban and Cuddalore on November 15. The official informed that rainfall will occur in most of the places in five districts including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karaikal, Cuddalore and Villupuram. Cyclone Gaja to Hit Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh on November 14, Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall to Lash the Southern States. 

On Sunday, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclone ‘Gaja’. According to IMD’s latest bulletin, the storm system is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours and will continue to maintain its intensity till November 15.

A cyclone alert has been issued in the southern states of India and precautionary steps are being taken to meet the situation. Fishermen have been warned to not venture into central parts of south and the central Bay of Bengal as well the southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal on November 13 to 15.

Storm surge is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Nagappattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal district of Puducherry at the time of landfall. Damage is expected over districts of Cuddalore, Nagappattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal district of Puducherry.
