New Delhi, January 6: There was no respite from cold wave conditions in north India as dense fog continued to partially stall flight and train operations in several parts. People in the national capital took refuge at night shelters as near Ramlila Maidan and other areas as cold wave intensified on Saturday. Chill in the air persisted in as several states in north India received fresh snowfall. Since the onset of winter, the national capital has been reeling under poor air quality levels.

A spell of rain was witnessed in parts of New Delhi on Sunday as a blanket of fog descended over the national capital. According to reports, a mild drizzle was witnessed in several parts, including Rajpath and the area around Press Club of India. As per weather forecast by the MET office, the minimum temperature on Sunday is expected to dip to 6 degrees Celcius, while the maximum temperature will be 19 degrees Celcius. According to Skymet, the pollution level in the national capital was in 'severely poor' category. After the spell of rain and thundershower, the situation is expected to improve marginally this week. Cold wave gripped Punjab and Haryana aggravated with the minimum temperature hovering at 3.5 degrees Celsius at Narnaul, making it the coldest place in the region. Several parts of the two states remained engulfed under a thick blanket of fog which adversely affected the air, rail and road traffic in the region, the MeT said.

In Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul and Spiti’s administrative centre Keylong received 20 cm snow, whereas Kinnaur’s Kalpa received 4 cm snow from 5.30 pm Friday to 8.30 am Saturday, the Shimla MeT Centre Director Manmohan Singh said. According to a report by PTI, Gondola in Kullu district received 10.5 cm snowfall, Pooh in Kinnaur 8 cm and Kothi in Chamba district got 5 cm snowfall during the period.
