Lucknow, February 21: In a tragic incident that has highlighted the persistent societal challenges of inter-caste relationships, a young couple was found dead at their residence in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district on Friday, February 20. Amarjeet Kushwaha (30) and his wife Rekha Sonkar (25), who had married out of love approximately five months ago, allegedly died by suicide within hours of each other. Local police officials believe the couple took the extreme step due to ongoing social isolation and being shunned by their respective families.

The incident unfolded in the Bindki area, where the couple had been living in a rented house on Lalauli Road since January. According to the police, Amarjeet was found hanging in the bathroom early Thursday morning. Rekha, who discovered her husband's body and initially alerted authorities, reportedly took her own life in another room before the police could arrive at the scene. Uttar Pradesh Shocker: Man Dies by Suicide After Wife Refuses To Cook Egg Curry in Banda, Probe Launched.

Husband and Wife Found Hanging in Rented Room Just Months After Eloping in UP

Amarjeet and Rekha’s relationship had been fraught with conflict from the beginning. Coming from different castes, their union was met with stiff opposition from both families. In September 2024, when Amarjeet’s family attempted to arrange his marriage elsewhere, Rekha approached the police to intervene. Despite several rounds of mediation, neither family accepted the relationship.

Refusing to separate, the couple eventually eloped and solemnized their marriage five months ago. Following their wedding, both families allegedly severed all ties with them, forcing the newlyweds to move away to Kanpur briefly before they returned to settle in Bindki earlier this year. Mathura Horror: Man, Wife and 3 Children Found Dead in Village, Police Suspect Mass Suicide.

Station House Officer (SHO) Hemant Kumar Mishra stated that the tragedy appears to have been triggered by a sudden sequence of events. After Amarjeet was found hanging, a distressed Rekha contacted neighbors and the police. However, in the time it took for the first responders to break into the locked premises, Rekha had also hanged herself.

"The forensics team has inspected the site and collected evidence," SHO Mishra confirmed. "The preliminary investigation suggests that the couple was under significant mental stress due to their social and familial boycott."

This double suicide has once again brought to light the intense pressure faced by inter-caste couples in parts of rural Uttar Pradesh. Despite legal protections for consenting adults, elopement and "love marriages" often result in complete social ostracization, leaving young couples without a financial or emotional safety net.

The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause and timing of death. Police are currently recording statements from the couple's neighbors and landlords to determine if there were any immediate disputes or harassment that preceded the incident.
