Imphal West, August 30: In the times, when global warming is on a rise, a man from Manipur has taken steps to fight against it. For the last 17 years, 45-year-old Moirangthem Loiya, a resident of Uripok Khaidem Leikai in Imphal West, has been fighting deforestation. He is responsible for replanting Punshilok forest in Langol hill-range in his efforts to fight pollution. As a child, Loiya used to enjoy the greenery of the lush Koubru peak. But in 2000, after finishing his studies, he went back and couldn't believe that the greenery was devasted. In 2002, locals took him to Maru Langol hill range, the place didn't even had a single tree. However, with his self-encouraged drive, he was able to bring back nature to life. "Today, the forest area covers 300 acres. 250 species of plants and 25 species of bamboo grow here and it is home to a variety of birds, snakes and wild animals," Loiya said.

Kereilhouvi Angami, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, said, "We appreciate his efforts. We welcome all those who protect the environment and are engaged in reforestation. We would encourage other people to also take part in protection, revival and re-forestation of forests." In fact, The forest department has demolished many illegal structures around the area to protect the forest.
