Mumbai, November 19: Some good news for those from Mumbai who love to travel to historical sites and would like a short-escape from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai. The Central government has approved the plan to prepare a ropeway that will reduce the time for travel from Mumbai to Elephanta Caves drastically. According to media reports, the proposed ropeway will help travellers reach Elephanta Caves in only 15 minutes as compared to an hour that is takes presently to reach the caves from Mumbai.

Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is home to a cave temples predominantly dedicated to Lord Shiva. They are located on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour, and are 10 kilometres to the east of Mumbai.

Those who travel to Elephanta caves have to take a ferry from the Gateway of India, Mumbai. The ferry services start from early morning. Though the ferry experience is a sought after one, it takes a little over an hour to reach the spot. However, the proposed ropeway will help travellers to reach in only 15 minutes. When the project gets completed, it will have the distinction of being India's first over-the-ocean ropeway. The ropeway project will be carried out by Mumbai Port.
