Thane, March 13: A routine test drive of the newly launched Tata Sierra turned into a harrowing ordeal on Tuesday evening in Thane’s Panchpakhadi area. The SUV, which had been wheeled out from the Heritage Motors showroom, ended up at the bottom of a 20-foot-deep construction trench after the driver reportedly lost control while speeding.
The incident occurred around 7:30 PM near the Utsav Hotel. According to the Naupada police and eyewitnesses, the driver, identified as 36-year-old Priya Kumari, was at the wheel when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. Before plunging into the pit, the SUV rammed into three stationary vehicles parked along the roadside-an auto-rickshaw and two motorcycles. The momentum was so high that the car tore through the safety barricades of an under-construction residential site belonging to the Ekatva Group, eventually nosediving into the excavation. Three occupants were inside the vehicle during the crash: the driver, a relative named Mithilesh Paswan (48), and a dealership employee, Chetan Deshmukh (30). Local residents rushed to the scene to pull the trapped passengers from the wreckage before the Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) Disaster Management Cell arrived. While the vehicle sustained heavy frontal damage, officials noted that the deployment of all six airbags played a crucial role in preventing fatalities. The trio was rushed to Kaushalya Hospital; Kumari sustained head and waist injuries, while the others were treated for minor leg and body injuries.
