Dehradun, August 18: Heavy rains lashed parts of Uttarakhand and especially the Uttarkashi distrit in the state on Sunday. Several highways and close to dozen of roads had to be closed down following the heavy rainfall. Even the Gangotri and Yamunotri national highways remained shut for hours due to flash floods. Many commuters were left stranded after flash floods created havoc in the Uttarkashi region. The Uttarkashi-Dehradun highway has also been closed due to a landslide. Cloudburst Causes Huge Damage in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi, Five People Go Missing, Several Houses Damaged.

Earlier, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat instructed the Uttarkashi District Magistrate and Disaster Management Secretary to carry out rescue operations. The chief minister ordered evacuation of people and arrangement of relief material to those affected by the floods.

Several houses have been washed away and people have been left stranded after the flashfloods in the region, said reports.

The flashfloods have resulted in landslides that have hampered the means of transportation as roads have been closed down due to the debris collected. The Tons river is overflowing above the danger mark and 18 people are reportedly missing after flashfloods.
