percent New Delhi, July 16: The wholesale price inflation (WPI) in India shot up to 5.77 percent in July on increasing prices of vegetables and fuel items, up from 4.43 percent in May. With this, the wholesale Inflation has jumped to nearly five-year high in June.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Monday, inflation in food articles stood at 1.80 percent in June 2018, as against 1.60 percent in the preceding month.

"The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 5.77 percent  (provisional) for the month of June, 2018 (over June, 2017) as compared to 4.43 percent (provisional) for the previous month and 0.90 percent during the corresponding month of the previous year", the release mentioned.

Reports inform that the inflation in vegetables jumped to 8.12 percent in June, from 2.51 percent in the previous month while the index for ‘Food Articles’ group rose by 1.1 percent to 141.7 (provisional) from 140.1 (provisional) for the previous month.

Due to the price hike in domestic fuel during the month, the inflation in ‘fuel and power’ basket also rose sharply to 16.18 percent in June from 11.22 percent in May.  Meanwhile, the index for ‘Mineral Oils’ group rose by 3.5 percent to 96.9 (provisional) from 93.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of furnace oil (10 percent ), ATF (7 percent ), LPG and naphtha (6 percent  each), bitumen (3 percent ), HSD, petrol and kerosene (2 percent  each) and petroleum coke (1percent ).
