India is set to move towards a fully digital toll collection system as cash payments at toll plazas across national highways will be discontinued from April 10, according to a government notification. The initiative, led by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aims to modernise tolling operations and improve efficiency across the country’s vast highway network.
Under the new system, all toll payments will be processed exclusively through digital modes such as FASTag and Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This transition is expected to significantly reduce congestion at toll plazas, increase vehicle throughput, and ensure seamless travel for commuters. According to NHAI, the shift will enhance transparency and consistency in toll transactions while minimising delays. With more than 1,150 toll plazas across national highways and expressways, the move is seen as a major step towards building a robust digital infrastructure for road transport.
Alongside the digital push, toll rates have also been revised in certain regions. The updated charges, implemented by NHAI and the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), reflect a marginal increase. Toll charges on national highways have gone up by up to 10 percent for passenger vehicles, while expressway tolls in Uttar Pradesh have increased between 1.50 percent and 3.50 percent. For instance, commuters travelling on the Lucknow Agra Expressway will now pay INR 675 for cars and SUVs, up from INR 665. Two wheeler users will be charged INR 335 instead of INR 330 per trip. Similarly, toll charges on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway have increased, with four wheelers now paying INR 295 and two wheelers INR 145 after a hike of INR 10 and INR 5 respectively.
The revised rates also apply to commercial vehicles, including buses and multi axle trucks. Authorities believe that despite the slight increase in toll charges, the shift to digital payments will improve overall travel experience by reducing waiting time and ensuring smoother traffic flow across highways.
