Chandigarh, July 2: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has said that those who smuggle and paddle drugs deserve to get capital punishment. The chief minister also said that he would recommend death penalty to the Centre for those found guilty of smuggling drugs. Captain Amarinder Singh added that it is important to set an example and that drug peddling was "destroying" an entire generation in Punjab.

"Decided to recommend death penalty for drug peddling/smuggling. Recommendation being forwarded to Centre. Since drug peddling is destroying entire generations, it deserves exemplary punishment.I stand by my commitment for drug free Punjab," said Punjab CM talking to news agency ANI:

That Punjab has a drug problem is now a documented fact. 70% of young Punjabi men are hooked on drugs or alcohol, a new study in Amritsar estimates. A recent study says that more than 8,60,000 young men in Punjab consume some form of drugs. But whether capital punishment, as the chief minister of Punjab suggests, is an answer to the question, is highly disputable.
