New Delhi, September 16: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), which has provisions for detentions up to two years without a trial. An order by the state government said that the place where Abdullah will be housed has been declared a temporary jail. The Supreme Court on Monday, September 16, asked the Centre to respond to a petition by Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko that saught production of former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.  UN Human Rights Experts Urge India to End Communication Shutdown in Jammu And Kashmir.

Vaiko said that Farooq Abdullah has been kept "under illegal detention without any authority of law". Objecting to the plea, Centre said that Vaiko is not locus standi and his request for release of National Conference leader was "abuse of the process of law".

A bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Nazeer and S A Bobde issued a notice to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir administration, and fixed Rajya Sabha MP and MDMK leader Vaiko's plea for hearing on September 30.

The leaders of the National Conference had objected to the abrogation of Article 370. Meanwhile, around 400 Jammu and Kashmir politicians, including Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are under arrest since scrapping of special status last month.
