Hyderabad, May 23: Results for the Kancheepuram Lok Sabha Constituency in Tamil Nadu has been declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI). G Selvam of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party has won the seat. The counting of votes for the Kancheepuram Lok Sabha Constituency began at 8 AM on Thursday, May 23. This is one of the 39 Parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu which went to poll on April 18. This constituency in Tamil Nadu is a newly formed Lok Sabha constituency after the 2008 delimitation.

The constituency originally existed for the 1951 election. The constituency number of this constituency is 6 and is reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) candidates. These segments were  earlier part of the now defunct Chengalpattu Lok Sabha constituency, and Alandur, which was earlier part of Chennai South Lok Sabha constituency. In 2019, sitting MP Maragatham Kumaravel of the AIADMK is seeking re-election from the Kancheepuram reserved constituency. Meanwhile, Selvam G of DMK, Sivaranjani.D of Naam Tamilar Katchi, Sekar.D of BSP are the official candidates for the polls this year.

In the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Tamil Nadu will vote in the second phase which are slated to take place on April 18. The counting of votes will be done on May 23. Out of the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, the BJP to contest 5 seats while the AIADMK is contesting on 27 seats.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, K. Maragatham of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had defeated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate G. Selvam from the Kancheepuram seat. Maragatham  had won the seat with 499,395 votes while Selvam managed to garner 352,529 votes.
