Anilbhau Babar of Shiv Sena has won the Khanapur Assembly constituency in Maharashtra by defeating the Independent candidate Sadashivrao Hanmantrao Patil. The constituency of Khanapur is one of the 288 Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) constituencies of Maharashtra. Geographically, it is one of the eight constituencies that fall under the ambit of Sangli district. The Election Commission of India has announced a single-phase voting in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2019 and hence, people of Khanapur will be voting on October 21 too.

Anil Babar, who hails from Shiv Sena, is the current MLA from Khanapur constituency. In 2014 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, he defeated Indian National Congress’ (INC) candidate and secured 72,849 votes in his favour. In 2009 Maharashtra Assembly Polls, it was Sadashivrao Patil of Congress who had defeated BJP’s Anil Babar and won from the Khanapur constituency. The Election Commission, on September 21, had declared the dates of Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly Elections 2019. The last date to file nominations was October 4, and to withdraw their candidatures was October 7.

The EC had announced that the voting will be done in a single-phase manner on October 21. The votes will be counted on October 24, and the results will be announced on the same day. The EC had also mentioned that all the electoral procedures will be completed by Diwali, i.e. October 28.

In its directives, the EC had said that specially-abled persons and senior citizens should be provided all the services for the smooth functioning during polls. Also, at least one polling booth in every assembly constituency has to be women-exclusive only, which means the election staff and security personnel will be women only.

The current term of Maharashtra government is set to end on November 9. With the polling dates nearing and the campaigning by political parties touching a new high every passing day, it will be interesting to see which side wins the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2019.
