In Maharashtra, the BJP and the Shiv Sena had broken their 25-year-old alliance ahead of the polls and contested separately. The two parties won 122 and 63 seats, respectively, and inked a post-poll pact to form the government. The then 15-year-old incumbent alliance of the Congress and the NCP was also split, with two parties being reduced to 42 and 41 seat, respectively.
