Pune, May 23: Pune Lok Sabha constituency, one of the 48 parliamentary seats in Maharashtra, went to polls on April 23 in the third phase of the general election. The prestigious seat saw a direct electoral fight between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. BJP's Girish Bapat was elected as Member of Parliament from Pune. Anil Shirole of the BJP is the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) from Pune.

The BJP denied candidature of Shirole in the upcoming Lok Sabha election and nominated Girish Bapat from Pune. The Congress nominated Mohan Joshi. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Congress's Vishwajeet Patangrao Kadam lost against Shirole. The process of filing nomination began from March 28. The last day for nominations was April 4. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and Swabhiman Paksha together bagged 42 seats in Maharashtra. The Congress won two seats, while the NCP four. Lok Sabha elections will take place in seven phases - on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19.
