A sessions court in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday has ordered that a notice be issued to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in connection to a 19-year-old murder case in Gorakhpur's Maharajganj district. UP CM Yogi Adityanath Inaugurates Luxurious Cruise in Varanasi.

The case is from the year 1999, when the current Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was a Member of Parliament (MP) from Gorakhpur, the constituency he represented for close to two decades before becoming the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. In the year 1999, in a scuffle that broke out between the groups of Yogi Adityanath and the Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Talat Aziz, Satya Prakash Yadav,  the personal security officer of the Samajwadi Party leader Aziz, was allegedly shot dead by Yogi Adityanath's group. The police report about the incident says that constable Yadav was killed during  a protest that was being organised in Maharajganj. The report adds that constable Yadav was killed after firing was opened by Yogi Adityanath's group on the protesters.

SP leader Aziz, who had earlier made a plea to the Sessions Court in March this year to reopen the case, had his plea rejected by the Sessions Court. Aziz then filed a review petition at the Lucknow High Court which ordered the Sessions Court to reopen the trial.

Opposition parties, Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress have already asked for resignation of the Chief Minister. The Opposition parties have alleged that Yogi Adityanath can influence the outcome of the trial if he remains to be the Chief Minister of the state.
