Lucknow, May 23: BJP's Shashank Verma won Nighasan Vidhan Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh bypolls. Polling for the Nighasan by-election was held on April 29 along with Lok Sabha polls in the fourth phase of general elections. As many as seven candidates are in the fray for just one Vidhan Sabha seat.

The Nighasan Assembly bypoll has been necessitated following the death of BJP MLA Patel Ram Kumar Verma. Verma had died in September 2018 at a hospital in Lucknow after a prolonged illness. He was 64. To retain the seat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded his son Shashank Verma. The Congress party nominated Atal Shukla to take on Shashank.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) declared Qayoom Khan as its candidates. In Uttar Pradesh, the SP has forged an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) for the Lok Sabha polls. The BJP stormed back to power in Uttar Pradesh after a gap of 15 years, winning a landslide victory in Assembly polls held in 2017.
