The Road Safety Week is an event held in different countries to raise awareness about road safety. The event encourages people to prevent casualties on road by taking necessary safety measures while driving. The 29th Road Safety Week was inaugurated by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Monday. The theme for Road Safety Week 2018 is 'Sadak Suraksha – Jeevan Raksha'

The Road Safety Week, scheduled between April 23 and 30 have been conducting various programmes including rallies and awareness programs focussed on the need for wearing helmets and seatbelt other than speed control and abiding traffic rules.

Different state and city police with Twitter handles have been tweeting creating awareness of the social issue. Police administration in Punjab, Ahmedabad, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai has been tweeting urging people to follow traffic rules while on the road.

Various auto manufacturers are also celebrating the Road Safety Week 2018 with different initiates. Hyundai is observing the day by providing awareness to its customers through 1300 workshops across India. Honda two-wheeler kickstarted awareness program in April, which will continue until May 3. They plan to take its #HelmetOnLifeOn campaign to over 5700 locations across India.

Ford India has joined hands with Indian Road Safety Campaign (IRSC) in raising awareness on road safety issues such as lack of pedestrian safety and lane driving. They will also focus on the increase in road rage and distracted driving. They are planning to target more than 5,000 students and their parents with the initiative.

The Chandigarh Police observed the safety week by organising a painting competition and face painting competition in which 214 students from 22 various government and private schools participated. In Jammu and Kashmir, rallies, seminars, debates and quiz competitions were held on Monday to mark the 29th Road Safety Week highlighting the need for safe driving practices.

In Tamil Nadu, a slew of programmes have been planned by the Regional Transport Authorities from April 23 to 29. The awareness rally was flagged off by District Collector T.N. Hariharan in the presence of Coimbatore City Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sujith Kumar. Awareness programs on speeding, overloading, drunk driving, jumping red signals and using mobile phones while driving were held on Wednesday.
