A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan passed the order in response to a public interest litigation seeking urgent judicial intervention to address the alarming rise in road fatalities. According to the Ministry of Road Transport, India recorded 1,72,890 road accident deaths in 2023, including 35,221 pedestrians, who accounted for 20.4 per cent of all road fatalities.
