New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday extended Onam wishes to the Malayali community. She conveyed 'Happy Onam' greetings standing alongside Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for the Ethnic Communities. Priyanca posted the video on Facebook with the caption, "From myself and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern - Happy Onam!" Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala which is celebrated with great pomp and fervour in the state. Malayalis living across countries observe the day with various festivities. In the video, Priyanca introduces her saying, "My name is Priyanca Radhakrishnan and I am the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for the Ethnic Communities. And I am here with my wonderful Prime Minister Jacinda Arden." Malayali communities living across countries observe the day in a grand way. Onam, the ten-day harvest festival of Kerala began on September 1 and ends on September 13. Of which, Thiruvonam, the most important day of the festival is observed today (September 11). It falls during Chingam, the first month of Malayalam solar calendar, Kollavarsham. The celebrations also spill on the 11 and 12the day during which cultural events likes boat races, Pulikkali (tiger play), Thiruvathira Kali and other traditional art forms are held in the state. Being the harvest festival of Kerala, food plays a major role in the festivities. Onasadhya, a grand feast is served on a banana leaf along with sweet dishes. People draw Pookalam, which are flower arrangement outside their houses welcoming the mythical King Mahabali. We wish everyone celebrating a Happy Onam!
