Princess Eugenie of York, Queen Elizabeth II's granddaughter, married her longtime boyfriend, Jack Brooksbank at the Windsor Castle on Friday. As soon as the wedding was aired on TV, pictures began floating on social media and the princess's wedding dress was quick to grab eyeballs. The white gown did not have the typical veil and showed off the princess' back surgery scar from the top of her neck to shoulder blades.
Eugenie's wedding dress was quick to go viral on social media platforms with internet users praising her bold decision. The princess was detected with scoliosis at the age of 12 and underwent surgery to get her spine corrected. Today, she is also a patron of Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital's (RNOH is where she underwent the surgery) Redevelopment Appeal. What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine bend sideways forming a slight curve. It is S or C shaped depending on how severe the curve is. While in some cases, the degree of the curve is stable, in others the curve increases over a period time. In cases of mild scoliosis, physiotherapy sessions can lessen the pain, however, in severe scoliosis, it can interfere with breathing and walking patterns of the person. It can also be coupled with severe back pain. Depending on the intensity of the condition which is the curvature of the spine, the doctor recommends surgery.
The princess said that the design of the dress was to honour people who looked after her during her surgery, and to help others with the same condition. She said, "I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it's really special to stand up for that."
