Pedro, a box turtle is rolling its way to freedom! When the handicapped diapsids were adopted, he did not have one of his hind legs. Then it escaped its new home and returned without the other hind leg also. Pedro's owner Sandra Traylor then took him to Louisiana State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Baton Rouge. And now Pedro has got its own set of legs, well, wheels made of Lego! Kelly Rockwell, DVM, a zoological medicine intern in the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital was quoted as saying, "Unfortunately, several months ago, he escaped. His owners hadn't seen him for several months. Then when he finally returned, he was missing the last back leg now." Ginger Guttner, the communications manager for LSU's School of Veterinary Medicine "There was nothing medically wrong with him. It was the zoological intern at the hospital, who using a Lego car kit and some parts of a syringe, animal-safe epoxy to make wheels for the turtle. CNN quoted Ginger Guttner, the communications manager for LSU's School of Veterinary Medicine as saying, " I would say the majority of special equipment we use has been fashioned or re-fashioned for a specific case." Pictures of handicapped animals being attached to wheels for their easy movement have gone viral on social media multiple times in the past. In 2017, video of a tiny goldfish being attached to a custom rig as it had difficulty in swimming due to bladder disorder was widely shared on the internet.
