A Jet Airways' passenger has sued the airlines for serving him non-vegetarian food. Banuprasad Jani, a Rajkot resident said he had ordered a vegetarian meal but was served meat. Jani dragged the matter to consumer court which directed the airlines to pay him a compensation of Rs 65,000.
The incident happened in 2016 when Jani was flying from Chennai to Mumbai on his way to Rajkot on August 20. He said he had ordered an Asian vegetarian meal but was served non-vegetarian food. After eating some of it, Jani fell sick and vomited. He had taken pictures of the incident that happened on the flight.
However, the airline stated that Jani first ordered Asian vegetarian meal, but later changed his order. The airlines also said that the food packet had 'non-veg' label. They said that the photographs taken by Jani show he had not eaten anything from it. But Jani sued the airlines demanding a compensation of Rs 7.25 lakh.
According to a report in The Times of India, Jani sued Jet Airways for making him 'a pure janeu-dhari Brahmin' — eat non-vegetarian food. Jani said being a Jain he not even tasted eggs in his life as it against his religious beliefs. According to Jani, serving him meat was an 'unfair trade practice'. The report quoted him as saying, "Since I have never eaten non-vegetarian food, I cannot say whether they had served me chicken or mutton."
After two years of the incident, last week, the Rajkot District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum ordered the airlines to compensate Jani for mental agony, harassment and legal expenditure. After Jani's advocate insisted, the rejected the airlines' contention and ordered it to pay Rs 50,000 for unfair trade practice, Rs 10,000 for mental harassment and Rs 5,000 for legal expenditure.
