A legal storm is brewing in the Malayalam film industry. Germany-based author George Thundiparambil has accused the makers of the highly anticipated Mohanlal directorial, Barroz - The Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure, of copyright infringement. The crux of the allegation lies in the purported similarities between his 2008 novel, Maya, and the screenplay of Barroz, which is reportedly adapted from a novel by filmmaker Jijo Punnoose. Thundiparambil's Maya is centred around the Fort Kochi legend of Kappiri Muthappan, an African slave turned mythical guardian of his master's treasure. The author claims that the core concept of his book has been unlawfully appropriated for the film.
