While hearing a petition seeking regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Delhi High Court said that deepfakes are on the rise every day. Senior Advocate Darpan Wadhwa, who appeared for the petitioners, told the court that deepfake circulation is a big problem and is not limited to politicians. "Statistics show that most of the deepfakes are on women - in some form of nudity or sexual acts," he added. Advocate Wadhwa also stated that the Government has issued advisories of a generic nature wherein the websites are told to remove deepfake content in 72 hours, which he said as too long. He said that deepfake must be removed immediately. Responding to advocate Darpan Wadwa, Chief Justice Manmohan said, "This technology can’t be prohibited, we need AI, it cannot be prohibited, so we have to exclude the negative part and use the positive part, now how do we segregate this." Deepfake Circulation is a Big Problem
He submitted that the Govt wrongly says the websites that makes these deepfakes are deemed as “intermediaries.”
