Chou Tien Chen Was Diagnosed With Colorectal Cancer

Chinese Taipei’s badminton star Chou Tien Chen discovered, how sport can have healing effects – at least makes you forget about the worries for the time being. The former world number two was keen to make sure he was in top shape ahead of the crucial qualification year for the Paris Olympics 2024. After undergoing a full medical examination in 2023, he was diagnosed with early-stage colon cancer. Cancer of any case and at any stage can be seen as a dangerous disease, especially for athletes who need to be in their best shape for the mega-events.

Speaking to Olympics.com Chou Tien Chen said, “If I did not find out, I could not stand here. Maybe I would stop my career.”

He added, “This year is a very special one for the Olympics, so I don't want to miss anything. I did a full check before the [events where I can collect] Olympic ranking points.” The two doctors who examined Chou discovered he was at a high risk of getting cancer. The disease has already made its presence felt in Chou Tien Chen’s family yet the 34-year-old athlete was surprised by the discovery. Doctors prescribed him a year-long wait. Chinese Badminton Player Liu Yuchen Proposes to Huang Ya Qiong After She Wins Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles Team Event In Paris Olympics 2024, Video Goes Viral.

Two-time Olympian said, “They checked for the cancer and said it is high risk. They said I could come back maybe one year later. I said I’d think about it. It's really weird because I got a health check, maybe I got cancer or something I can cut earlier, but they said, ‘You just wait for one year.' I thought it was very weird, so I changed the hospital and I checked it again and they found the cancer.”

Luckily, the star underwent surgery to remove cancerous cells from his colon. The doctors also cut out a part of his large intestine to prevent the spread of the disease. Since the discovery in 2023, he won the Hylo Open in Germany, won the Thailand Masters, and made the final of the Swiss Open. Chou kept the news a secret from his fans and even his friends for almost a year but is now speaking out in the hopes that his story will inspire others to undergo early cancer screening.
