STUMPS on Day 1! It has been a sluggish sort of a day in terms of action with Joe Root and England playing some old-fashioned Test cricket in contrast to their 'Bazball' approach. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett found it tough to score freely off the new ball before both were sent packing by Nitish Kumar Reddy. Ollie Pope and Joe Root then stitched a 109-run partnership and it seemed that England were slowly gaining in confidence before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the former on the first ball after tea. Harry Brook, the new no 1 ranked Test batter, could not make much of an impact with Jasprit Bumrah sending him back to the pavilion for 11 runs before Joe Root and Ben Stokes showed dogged resistance, stitching an unbeaten 79-run partnership. Joe Root came close to completing what would have been a 37th Test century but he was stranded on 99* and would have to wait to get to the three-figure mark. For India, Nitish Kumar Reddy was the best bowler with two wickets for 46 runs while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja scalped one each. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep went wicketless on Day 1.
India have taken the second new ball and will hope to dismiss at least one of the two batters here before the close of play. The Ben Stokes-Joe Root partnership has been a steady one for Englan,d while India will look to ensure that it doesn't carry on for a long time. In the middle of the 81st over, there was a slight delay in play because of flying bugs at the Lord's Cricket Ground.
Ben Stokes and Joe Root have had a steady partnership and both these players will look to stay undefeated at the close of play today. India on their part, would ideally want another wicket and that of Joe Root. England have batted sensibly, despite the slow run rate and both Joe Root and Ben Stokes have been made to work hard here at Lord's.
England have lost two quick wickets in the third session on Day 1 and now, it is on Ben Stokes and Joe Root to rebuild this innings. Both the batters are experienced enough and would ideally hope to remain at the crease at stumps. India on the other hand, will ideally want a wicket at this stage, preferably that of Joe Root.
OUT! Jasprit Bumrah has castled Harry Brook and he has won the battle between the no 1 ranked Test bowler and the top-ranked Test batter. The ball nipped back in and crashed into the stumps. It is a gem of a delivery and Harry Brook has to depart. Harry Brook b Jasprit Bumrah 11(20)
OUT! India get the breakthrough that they have been looking for and it has come through Ravindra Jadeja! The left-arm spinner induces a deflection of Ollie Pope's bat and Dhruv Jurel does well to complete the catch. Ollie Pope c (sub)Dhruv Jurel b Ravindra Jadeja 44(104)
TEA on Day 1! It has been a hard-fought session for Joe Root and Ollie Pope, with both batters grinding it out hard to score runs. Their partnership has gone past the 100-run mark and although it was unlike what we have seen from England in the 'Bazball' era, England would be happy not to lose any wicket. We will be back with the last session of the day shortly!
FIFTY for Joe Root! It is his 67th in Test cricket and the England great showed just why he is a giant in the longest format with a superb knock where he has had to fight hard for every run. Joe Root's performance will be key here if England are to get a good first innings total.
England have scored 120 while losing two wickets and Joe Root along with Ollie Pope have had an unbeaten 76-run partnership. Both the right-handers have found it tough to score but battled it out hard. India on the other hand, will look for a breakthrough at this stage.
Rishabh Pant has left the field due to an injury to his hand and he has been replaced by Dhruv Jurel, who now has the gloves. India would hope that the injury to Rishabh Pant is nothing serious.
The second session has begun with four runs coming off the first over bowled after lunch by Jasprit Bumrah. India will look for a way to separate these two batters to gain control over this Test match.
LUNCH on Day 1! It has been an enthralling session indeed with India walking back as the slightly happier of the two teams. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett got England off to a sedate start and were aided by luck as well. And just when it seemed that the opening partnership was going to flourish, in came Nitish Kumar Reddy who dismissed both the openers in the same over. Joe Root and Ollie Pope joined forces and stitched an unbeaten 39-run stand.
Joe Root and Ollie Pope have joined forces at the crease after Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were dismissed in one over by Nitish Kumar Reddy. Both the right-handers will look to remain at the crease with lunch very close on Day 1 of the IND vs ENG 3rd Test.
OUT! Nitish Kumar Reddy has struck again in the over as this time, he gets the wicket of Zak Crawley! It was a peach of a delivery slightly outside the off-stump and Zak Crawley got an edge with Rishabh Pant taking a simple catch. Post the drinks break, India have hit England back with two quick wickets. Zak Crawley c Rishabh Pant b Nitish Kumar Reddy 18(43)
OUT! India have a breakthrough and it has come from an unlikely source with Nitish Kumar Reddy being the man to deliver the wicket. It was a short delivery and Ben Duckett attempted a pull shot. But he got an edge and Rishabh Pant made no mistake in taking the catch. Ben Duckett c Rishabh Pant b Nitish Kumar Reddy 23(40)
Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett have given England a cautious start here. Both the batters have not yet looked totally comfortable against Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep. India will look for an early breakthrough while England seek a solid opening partnership.
Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, on expected lines, have begun proceedings for England with the bat in hand. Jasprit Bumrah had the new ball and induced an edge of Ben Duckett's bat only for the ball to fall short of Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. Two runs have come off the first over.
