Trailing 0-2 in the five-match series against England, team India made three changes to the playing XI for the third Test at the Trent Bridge. The visitors included opener Shikhar Dhawan, debutant wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah in place of Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik, and Kuldeep Yadav. Interestingly, Pant becomes 291st player to feature in Test cricket for India and was handed the cap by Indian captain Virat Kohli. The left-handed batsman’s inclusion in the playing XI gained momentum after Karthik failed to impress in the first two Tests as he scored just 21 runs in four outings. Pacer Bumrah, who was sidelined for the first two matches due to the injury, also walks back into the playing XI. Dhawan, who was dropped after the first match, is lucky to be back in the side as well and will be hoping to make it count. Meanwhile, Pant looked in good form recently during the unofficial Tests against England Lions and West Indies A. The left-handed batsman, who is known for his aggressive stroke play, scored half-centuries in both the innings Against England Lions’ bowling line-up which featured fast-bowlers Chris Woakes and Sam Curran. India, after losing the semis opener by 31 runs at Edgbaston, was handed a shambolic defeat in the second Test at Lord’s. The visitors were outplayed by an innings and 159 runs. India failed to go past even 150-run mark in both the innings at Lord’s. The Kohli-led having made three changes will be looking to start afresh.
