England vs Sri Lanka Highlights And Cricket Score 2nd Match - ODI Commentary

End of Over : 50.0 ENG: 278/9

So, England have got less than the average total on this pitch but the surface is holding up a bit and chasing won't be easy. We hope the rains stay away as they did in the first half. Do Sri Lanka have the batting to chase it down? Join us in a while to find out.

Lasith Malinga is giving an interview. He says after the Asia Cup he feels he can do good for his team. Adds further he tries to give his best whenever needed. Admits he went for runs in his initial spell but then brought in his variation and bowled well. States he is proud to represent his country and gives his all when he plays for them. Mentions he does not think about the future and he only focuses on doing his best. He reckons the wicket is a little dry, there is not a lot of help for the fast bowlers but the spinners will have some assistance. Ends by saying they can chase this down.

The innings though belonged to Lasith Malinga! His 8th five-fer in ODIs has kept Sri Lanka in the game. Nuwan Pradeep too was economical towards the death. The rest picked up a wicket each but don't have anything significant to boast off. Their fielding was also not up to the mark.

A good recovery for Sri Lanka towards the end. They pulled things back a bit as at one stage 300 looked very much possible. Still, one will reckon that this should be enough for the visitors. England lost an early wicket after being asked to bat but Bairstow, Root and Morgan played themselves in. England's Test skipper and ODI captain got to their 50s while stitching a 68-run stand. Morgan missed out on his 100 and once he fell England started losing quick wickets. But Adil Rashid's cameos towards the end ensured they get to a total which is their highest against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka while batting first.

49.6 4

Thisara Perera to Adil Rashid. FOUR! And a boundary to end the innings! A cameo from Rashid. Full again outside off, sliced over point. Once again the sweeper is 15 yards inside the ropes and the ball goes past him. ENGLAND END ON 278-9!

49.5 4

Thisara Perera to Adil Rashid. FOUR! He makes one count! Full and outside off, Rashid chips it over cover-point. Sweeper who is 15-yards in does not do enough as it goes for a boundary.

End of Over : 49 4 Runs ENG: 267/9

46.6 W

Lasith Malinga to Liam Dawson. OUT! 5-fer for Lasith Malinga! His 8th in this format! And this is surely the vintage Malinga we are witnessing after a long time. Perfect slower ball on off, Liam looks to play it to the on side but the ball dips at the very end and goes under his bat and onto the off pole. Excellent stuff!

46.5 1

Lasith Malinga to Adil Rashid. The batsman has played it to the point region. The batsmen have run through for a single. Malinga takes his cap after bowling the fifth ball as the umpire has called for the over. The third umpire corrects him and he calls Lasith for one more ball. A bit embarrassing!

46.4 4

46.1 W

Lasith Malinga to Chris Woakes. OUT! What a review from the hosts! And Malinga gets his fourth! Slow yorker on the legs of Woakes. He looks to work it to the on side but misses it completely to get hit on his leg. Sri Lanka appeal but the umpire shakes his head. The home side takes the review. Replay shows us three reds and Woakes is out of here. Surprising, Chris was signalling he had some willow on that one but Snicko showed there was no bat involved. Maybe he was just signaling so that the Lankan players do not take the review. Nevertheless, he has to depart and the visitors might just not play out their full quota of overs.

An LBW decision is taken up.

End of Over : 46 10 Runs ENG: 249/7
45.6 0

Nuwan Pradeep to Liam Dawson. No run. Yorker to end the over. 10 runs and a wicket from it! Full on leg, hits Dawson on his foot.

45.5 4

Nuwan Pradeep to Liam Dawson. FOUR! Not good from Malinga in the deep. Pradeep goes hard outside off, Dawson pulls it but gets a top edge towards fine leg. Malinga hares to his right, gets a hand to it but couldn't keep it inside the rope. Could prove costly these runs.

45.4 0

Liam Dawson is in next.

45.3 W

Nuwan Pradeep to Jos Buttler. OUT! Bowled 'em! England's finisher is just finished! Full toss on middle, Buttler swings but fails to put bat on ball. Looks back to see the middle pole fallen. Big wicket this as Buttler is one of the best at this stage. The umpires had made Jos wait to check for a no-ball but it is deemed legal. Not only the front foot but Pradeep's back foot was also checked. Was nearly cutting the side crease. All okay though and Jos returns to the dressing room. England dented further.

44.5 2

Akila Dananjaya to Jos Buttler. Brilliant fielding again! Pradeep is the man once again. Buttler powers this through covers off the back foot. Nuwan makes good ground to his left, dives and pushes it back into play. Two taken.

41.6 0

Lasith Malinga to Chris Woakes. NOT OUT! So nothing on the Free Hit! A yorker on off, Woakes jams it out towards covers. He wants a run but is sent back. The fielder picks the ball up and scores a direct hit at the striker's end. The players appeal and the umpire takes it upstairs. Replays show that Woakes is well in. End of an eventful over, two wickets and three runs from it. Also, this could very well be the momentum changing over.

41.6 1

Lasith Malinga to Chris Woakes. Anticlimax! Malinga went for another slower yorker but this one slips out of his hand. Bowls a high full toss which Woakes ducks under. No ball given.

Run out appeal! Looks safe, let's have a look... Woakes is the man in question.

Chris Woakes to face the hat-trick ball!

41.5 W

Lasith Malinga to Moeen Ali. OUT! TIMBER! Two-in-two for Malinga. 500th international wicket for him. He is surely turning back the clock. Another top, top nut. The slower yorker on middle, Moeen Ali is completely foxed as he tries to flick. He is way too early into the shot. The ball sneaks under his bat and hits the timber behind. Ali walks back for a golden duck and now 300 is suddenly looking too far. Hat-trick ball coming up...

Moeen Ali replaces his skipper in the middle.

41.4 W

Lasith Malinga to Eoin Morgan. OUT! Slower ball does the trick! Morgan departs in the nervous 90s. This is the 4th time he has been dismissed in the 90s in ODIs. Excellent delivery! Vintage Malinga there. He rolls his fingers over the seam and lands it on the perfect length. Just behind the driving length. Morgan is sucked into the drive but does not pick the slower one. He checks his shot but ends up chipping it back to the bowler who holds on to it. Another timely wicket for Lanka and that too a big one. This can easily make a difference of at least 15 runs to the final total.

We are all set for the action to begin. Out come the openers, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow. The former will be on strike and he will be facing Lasith Malinga, who has the first new ball in hand. Here we go...

Sri Lanka's head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha gave an interview before the toss. Said that it's a used pitch for this match. He did not think England would go with three spinners. Credited Dinesh Chandimal to get the team together. He saw a lot of commitment and energy in the 15 overs they played in the last game. Added that Mathews is a key player and he hoped, he gets fit and comes back into the team. Further said that Angelo is training hard. Mentioned that they are trying to find the right combination for the World Cup. Ended the interview by saying that the selectors are very supportive and they are trying to do their best to find the best combination.

Pitch report - Very hot and humid conditions. Same pitch is being used. Looks a very good surface and will spin later on. Might offer something to the pacers early on. The outfield has quickened up as the last few days have been quite dry. The average first innings total in the last five ODIs is 210.

Eoin Morgan says he wanted to field first due to the weather. Adds further it though looks a good wicket and they would look to bat well. Informs they are also going in with the same team. Mentions he is happy with the approach of the batters. Reckons they will have to adapt to the wicket as it might play a touch different. Further adds there might be lack of bounce and it might be a touch slow but they have to adapt. Ends by saying they are enjoying their tour of Sri Lanka.

Dinesh Chandimal says it looks like a really good pitch and they hope to get early wickets to put England under pressure. Informs they are going in with the same XI. Mentions he is happy with the approach of the guys. Ends by saying they know England are the no. 1 ODI side at the moment and they will try to do their best.

TOSS - Up goes the coin and Eoin Morgan calls it wrong. Sri Lanka elect to field.

Hello and welcome to the second ODI between Sri Lanka and England. The first game was called off due to bad weather after just 15 overs of play. The weather forecast for today is also not great, in case today's game is also ruined by rain, we have a reserve day. However, it is bright and sunny now and let us hope we get a full match today. The English side are favorites heading into this game but the hosts won't go down without a fight. Stay tuned for further updates.

End of Over : 29.0 SL: 140/5

Right then, that's all we have from this run-truncated match. Sri Lanka have serious issues with their batting and will have to sort it out before the next game. The third ODI is on 17th October in Pallekele. Do join us at 1430 local (0900 GMT) for all the action. Cheers!

England's skipper and Man of the Match, Eoin Morgan, says it is not a bad start to the series. He feels it was not their best game with the bat as they didn't finish well in the end. States that he and Joe Root have found ways to score on such slow surfaces. Mentions he was very scratchy early in his innings but he was well supported by the batsmen who played around him. Credits the way Sri Lanka, especially Malinga bowled at the death. Appreciates Woakes and Stone for the way they bowled. He believes they can surely do a lot better than today. Tells that they played three spinners and Ben Stokes too is an option but he was not required. Ends by saying that with the rain around they wanted to get the 20 overs in quickly.

Sri Lanka's skipper, Dinesh Chandimal, credits England for the way they played. Mentions they failed to capitalize on the start they got with the ball. Admits there were mistakes committed but they showed good enthusiasm out there. He says the batting of Dhananjaya de Silva and Thisara Perera were positives. He feels the total was one they could have chased but the start was not a good one.

After early hiccups, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Perera managed to bring some sanity in the chase as they stitched in a 43-run stand. This partnership was bettered by the pair of Thisara Perera and de Silva, in which, the former appeared to be in scintillating form. Just when Thisara started to look threatening, the rain picked up its intensity and the umpires were forced to stop the game.

In pursuit, Sri Lanka were pegged back early by the English seamers. Chris Woakes snapped up three wickets and along with Olly Pope, he completely pushed the home team on the back foot. The Lankans lost 4 wickets inside Powerplay 1 and it appeared that the only thing that can save them is the rain. However, England smartly utilized their spinners from both ends to get the 20 overs bowled quickly so that there is no hindrance in their way.

A strong performance by England to go one-nil up in the series. They batted with a lot of control, especially in the first 40 overs, and managed to post a challenging total on the board. Later on, Lasith Malinga turned the clock and produced a magnificent spell to claim a 5-wicket haul. His efforts didn't allow England the kind of finish they desired for in the death overs.

CALLED OFF! We're getting the official confirmation that the second ODI has been called off due to incessant rain. ENGLAND WIN BY 31 RUNS (DLS) and go 1-0 up in the series.

Update 1637 local - The clock is ticking and we have started to lose overs as well. No improvement in conditions as it continues to rain. Signs are ominous. Stay with us for more updates...

Update 1605 local - It's pelting down now and the whole ground is covered. Things not looking too promising currently. We can play until 1800 local time, so let's be positive. Stay tuned.

PLAY STOPPED! The two umpires now come together and now they have decided to call for the covers. It's been drizzling for quite some time and finally, the match officials feel that the conditions are not conducive enough to carry on. Large blue covers are enveloping the entire field as the rain is picking up its intensity. Needless to say, England are well ahead on the DLS par score. Stay tuned for more updates...
