Ali Asfak Thara Owner of KPL Team Arrested Due Alleged Betting Charges

Ali Asfak Thara, the owner of Belagavi Panthers, Karnataka Premier League has been allegedly arrested for betting by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in Bengaluru. He was booked for gambling under the Karnataka Police Act. Sandeep Patil, the joint commissioner of police said that there was enough evidence to get Thara arrested during this season of the Karnataka Premier League. Patil further informed that Thara was in touch with a bookie and placed an illegal bet in Dubai. "Ali was in touch with players of other teams during KPL. The players are being enquired. The CCB was also in touch with BCCI’s anti-corruption unit. “Based on the police report the ACU will check what all violations have been conducted under our code," Ajit Singh Shekhawat, the head of ACU, said. The Belagavi Panthers lost the qualifiers 2 against the Hubli Tigers in the eighth edition of the league.

Manish Pandey is the star batsman of the team. Ali was detained three days ago by the police on the suspicion of match-fixing charges. During the interrogation, he also confessed to having contacts with the rest of the players. The police also went on to seize Rs 41 lakhs from a shop located in Nagarathpet. The duo collected bets on the recent India-South Africa match. They have named other bookies who are involved in the case.
