Emily Hart: How a Fake AI Influencer Scammed US Conservatives for Tuition Money

An Indian medical student funded his education by creating 'Emily Hart', an AI-generated pro-Trump influencer. Using tools like Google Gemini to target conservative audiences, he generated viral 'rage-bait' content to earn money. The project ended when Instagram removed the account for fraud, highlighting the risks of AI personas in online political discourse.

A 22-year-old medical student from India has revealed he created a sophisticated AI-generated persona, "Emily Hart," to monetize content aimed at conservative American audiences. The project, which generated thousands of dollars in monthly revenue, was designed to help the student finance his orthopedic surgery training and support his goal of moving to the United States.

According to a report by WIRED, the student, who operated under the pseudonym "Sam" to protect his identity, developed the AI model after unsuccessful attempts to earn money through other online ventures. The Instagram account, which featured a virtual influencer resembling actor Jennifer Lawrence, quickly gained traction by curating a stream of content focused on "MAGA" (Make America Great Again) themes, including pro-Second Amendment, anti-abortion and anti-immigration messaging. Indian Man Dupes Republicans With AI-Generated Influencer ‘Emily Hart’; Makes Thousands of Dollars.

'Emily Hart' Profile Meticulously Crafted To Align With MAGA

Sam told WIRED that he utilized generative AI tools, including Google’s Gemini, to refine his strategy. When he initially struggled to find an audience with generic content, he sought advice from the AI on how to improve engagement.

"The conservative audience (especially older men in the US) often has higher disposable income and is more loyal," Sam explained, noting that the AI identified the conservative niche as a highly effective target.

The "Emily Hart" profile was meticulously crafted to align with this demographic. Images depicted the AI-generated nurse in scenarios such as ice fishing, target shooting, and wearing conservative political attire. The account’s reach grew rapidly, with some reels securing millions of views. Sam successfully monetized the following by selling branded merchandise and utilising subscription platforms like Fanvue, where users paid for exclusive, AI-generated content. The Rage Bait Strategy

The operation relied on the ability of the content to generate strong, often polarizing, reactions. Sam noted that his strategy relied on "rage bait" to drive algorithmic engagement, noting, "It's a win-win situation, because you're getting engagement anyway, and your content will go viral."

While the student acknowledged the ethical complexities of his project, he maintained that he did not view it as a scam. "I was spending maybe 30 to 50 minutes of my day, and I was making good money for a medical student," he said. "I don't feel like I was scamming people."

'Emily Hart' Account No Longer Exists on Instagram

The popularity of the account eventually drew scrutiny regarding the authenticity of the influencer. Instagram took down the "Emily Hart" account in February for what it described as "fraudulent" activity, and a connected Facebook profile was subsequently removed.

The revelation has sparked broader discussions about the ease with which AI-generated personas can infiltrate social media ecosystems to influence political discourse and generate profit. For Sam, however, the project has concluded. With the account removed, he stated he has moved on from the influencer space to focus on the remainder of his medical studies.
