Muslims across the globe observe Ashura on the 10th day of Muharram. It is the first month of the Islamic calendar. As per Islamic scriptures, the death of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Islamic Prophet Mohammed (Muhammad) in the Battle of Karbala, happened on the day of Ashura. This day is widely observed as a day of mourning and grief. Sunni and Shia Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in different ways. In Saudi Arabia, the month of Muharram commenced from July 7. Therefore, Ashura in Saudi Arabia will be observed on July 16. In India, Muharram began on July 8 and therefore it will be observed on July 17. Iman Hussain was killed on the day of Ashura at the Battle of Karbala in the 7th century. Shia Muslims take out processions and hold gatherings and mourn by cutting themselves with swords, knives and sharp chains to emulate the suffering of Imam Hussain. Sunni Muslims also remember the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his family members but do not indulge in the practice of self-flagellation. Sunni Muslims observe fast and offer prayers during Muharram.
