Venugopal said the party had initially sought permission to organise an event at the Ashoka Hotel lawn but was denied permission after police intervention. He further alleged that police personnel stopped party workers from setting up infrastructure at another venue.

The Congress leader said the proposed October 30 programme was planned as a curtain-raiser for the November 1 rally and march against alleged electoral irregularities.

Venugopal further accused the Centre of attempting to prevent the opposition from raising concerns over electoral rolls and alleged irregularities.

"We are not going to succumb to their pressure. We know how to conduct the programme," he said, adding that the party would announce its next course of action.

Venugopal also alleged that the government was attempting to suppress dissent and restrict political parties from criticising its actions.

Referring to the November 1 rally, he said around 21 political parties were expected to participate in the programme at Ramlila Maidan.
