Yamunanagar, May 4 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Assembly Abhay Singh Chautala today said the INLD-BSP alliance will implement the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission in the state if voted to power.

Earlier in the day, several INLD and BSP activists, including Chautala, courted arrest as part of their Jail Bharo protest seeking completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the BSP, which recently entered into an alliance in Haryana, had begun their Jail Bharo protest from Bhiwani last week. The parties have plans to stage similar agitations in several parts of the state.

Chautala exuded confidence that the joint effort of the INLD and the BSP to secure justice for the state and get the SYL canal completed will bear positive results.

He also said, "As soon as the INLD-BSP alliance is voted to power it will implement the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission report in Haryana."

Today, the workers of INLD and BSP gathered in large number at the District Secretariat to court arrest as part of their protest.

Those to be taken into custody were Abhay Singh Chautala, state president of BSP Prakash Bharati, INLD's state chief Ashok Arora, former MLA Dilbag Singh, MLAs Balwan Singh Daulatpuria, Anup Dhanak and hundreds of party workers.

The next round of the Jail Bharo protest would take place in Nuh on May 8, a INLD spokesperson said.

Accusing the BJP government in the state of betraying the cause of farmers, he claimed that the Dadupur Nalvi canal scheme was scrapped because the government did not want to pay the enhanced compensation to the farmers as directed by the Supreme Court.

But this canal was essential for the survival of Yamunanagar, Ambala and Kurukeshtra districts as the groundwater in the region was fast depleting, the spokesperson said, adding the canal would not only irrigate the lands of these districts but also replenish groundwater level.
