The Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered the replacement or refund of a Grand Vitara in a case where a car owner alleged repeated engine problems linked to E20 petrol. The Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (Additional Bench) has directed a car dealer and manufacturer to replace a Grand Vitara with a new E20-compatible model or refund its purchase price after ruling in favour of a consumer who alleged repeated engine problems linked to ethanol-blended petrol. The commission also awarded compensation for mental harassment and litigation expenses.

According to the Patrika report, the order was passed in a complaint filed by Dr. Premraj Devta of Raipur, who purchased the vehicle in June 2024 and claimed it repeatedly developed engine faults despite multiple repairs. The dealer and manufacturer denied any manufacturing defect. The ruling applies to this individual consumer dispute and is not a nationwide determination regarding E20 fuel or vehicle compatibility. Mercedes-Benz India Clarifies E20 Fuel Compatibility of Its Vehicles, Addresses Viral Claims About Mileage Reduction.

What Is the Case About?

According to the complaint, Dr. Premraj Devta purchased a Grand Vitara on June 3, 2024. Several months later, on November 11, 2024, the vehicle reportedly developed engine problems and was taken to an authorised workshop.

The workshop allegedly attributed the issue to adulterated fuel and carried out repairs, including cleaning the fuel tank. However, the complainant said the vehicle continued to experience repeated breakdowns despite multiple visits to the service centre. The dealer and manufacturer maintained that the vehicle did not suffer from any manufacturing defect. How Many NDA Voters Don’t Support E20 Petrol Rollout?

Lab Test Became Key Evidence

According to the complaint, Dr. Devta later had a sample of the fuel tested at an accredited SGS laboratory. The laboratory report reportedly concluded that the petrol quality was unsuitable for the engine, resulting in repeated choking of the engine.

The complainant also stated that when he contacted the petrol pump, he was informed that no other customer had reported a similar issue. After the dispute remained unresolved and the vehicle's value was reportedly assessed at around INR 12 lakh, Dr. Devta approached the consumer commission.

What Did the Consumer Court Order?

The Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission held that the complainant was entitled to relief in the case.

The commission directed the dealer and manufacturer to:

  • Provide a new vehicle of the same model that supports E20 petrol within 45 days, or
  • Refund the vehicle's purchase price of INR 20,50,494.

The commission also awarded:

  • INR 1 lakh as compensation for mental harassment.
  • INR 10,000 towards litigation expenses.

If the amount is not paid within the stipulated period, interest at 7% per annum will apply, according to the order.

What Is the E20 Petrol Debate?

E20 petrol is a blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. The Indian government has been promoting ethanol blending to reduce crude oil imports, lower emissions and support domestic biofuel production.

At the same time, some vehicle owners have raised concerns about engine performance, mileage and compatibility in certain vehicles. Automobile manufacturers have also been introducing E20-compatible models as part of the transition.

The Raipur case centres on the specific facts presented before the consumer commission and should not be interpreted as a general finding that E20 fuel damages vehicles or that all non-E20-compatible vehicles will experience similar problems.

The order is significant because it addresses consumer rights in a dispute involving alleged E20 fuel compatibility issues.

However, legal experts note that the decision is limited to the evidence presented in this individual case before the Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. It does not establish a binding precedent for all consumer courts or amount to a nationwide judicial finding on E20 petrol.
