Channel 4 is preparing to cut approximately 300 jobs - representing roughly a quarter of its workforce - in what marks the largest round of layoffs in the broadcaster's 43-year history. The planned downsizing is part of a broad restructuring effort under new chief executive Priya Dogra, who took over in March. The cuts aim to rein in operational costs following a turbulent period for traditional television advertising.
Financial Pressures and Advertising Slump
The broadcaster's workforce reductions follow three consecutive years of pre-tax losses, including a £10 million deficit last year, alongside £12 million in 2024 and a record £52 million in 2023, reports The Guardian. Because Channel 4 relies on advertising for roughly 90 per cent of its total revenue, it has faced mounting pressure as digital platforms continue to capture a larger share of advertising budgets. Cash reserves also declined to £49 million at the end of last year - their lowest level in over two decades - prompting the network to secure an agreement with the government in July to access remaining funds within its revolving credit facility.
Leadership and Restructuring Strategy
Dogra is expected to outline the upcoming organisational changes during an all-staff meeting on Wednesday, September 9. London-based positions are anticipated to be a primary focus of the cuts, given the network's previous push to expand its headcount across other regions and nations.
A Channel 4 spokesperson addressed the organisational review, saying, "As we have shared publicly, under the leadership of our new CEO, we have been assessing Channel 4's strategic direction, including a comprehensive review of the structure, shape and size of our organisation. We have committed to keeping Channel 4 staff updated in a timely and transparent way, so any organisational change will be shared with them first and we won't be commenting on speculation." Alongside workforce reductions, the restructuring is expected to shift the broadcaster's programming strategy toward commissioning fewer shows with larger budgets, coupled with increased marketing support for flagship content.
