How To Use the UMANG App and SMS To Check Your EPF Interest Credit Status

The EPFO has begun crediting 8.25 per cent interest for FY 2025-26, aiming for completion by today, July 15. This faster process is powered by the new CITES 2.01 IT platform. Members can view their updated balances via the official EPFO portal, the UMANG app, or by using the SMS and missed call services. If issues arise, grievances can be filed through the EPFiGMS portal.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has initiated the annual process of crediting interest for the financial year 2025-26. Subscribers will see an interest rate of 8.25 per cent applied to their provident fund balances, with the process expected to be completed and reflected in member passbooks by today, July 15. This year’s distribution is particularly significant as it marks one of the fastest interest credit cycles in recent years.

The streamlined timeline has been achieved through the implementation of EPFO’s upgraded Centralised IT-Enabled Services (CITES 2.01) platform, which has unified the organisation's previously fragmented database. EPFO Launches 6-Month Amnesty Scheme for Exempted PF Trusts; Check Eligibility and Key Details.

How To Check Your EPF Interest Credit

Members can verify that the interest has been credited by checking their updated EPF passbook. There are several convenient digital channels available for subscribers to monitor their accounts:

  • EPFO Member Portal: Log in to the official EPFO passbook portal at passbook.epfindia.gov.in using your Universal Account Number (UAN) and password. Once logged in, you can view your updated balance and transaction history.
  • UMANG App: The UMANG mobile application provides a unified interface for various government services. You can check your status by navigating to 'EPFO' > 'Employee Centric Services' > 'View Passbook'.
  • SMS Service: If your mobile number is registered with your UAN, you can send an SMS - EPFOHO UAN ENG - to 7738299899 to receive your latest balance details instantly.
  • Missed Call Service: Subscribers whose KYC details, including their mobile number and UAN, are updated can get balance information by giving a missed call to the designated EPFO number.

Understanding the Process

The 8.25 per cent interest rate, which was ratified by the Central Board of Trustees and approved by the government earlier this year, is calculated on a monthly running balance basis. Under the new CITES 2.01 system, the interest is auto-computed and subsequently undergoes automated pre-validation by field authorities to ensure accuracy and eliminate errors across the approximately 34 crore member accounts. Officials have noted that because the interest is credited in stages across such a vast number of accounts, members who do not see the entry immediately should wait a few days for the system update to reflect in their specific passbooks. EPFO: How To Check Old and New Claims, Access Service History on Revamped Portal.

Key Enhancements for Members

In addition to faster interest crediting, the transition to the centralised CITES platform has introduced several service improvements:

  • Simplified Withdrawals: Partial withdrawal rules have been consolidated into three categories - essential needs (illness, education, marriage), housing, and special circumstances - with members now permitted to withdraw up to 75% of their total balance.
  • Auto-Settlement: Claims for advance withdrawals of up to ₹5 lakh are now eligible for an auto-settlement mechanism, provided the account is fully KYC-linked.
  • Seamless Transfers: With Aadhaar-linked UANs, the transfer of PF accounts between employers is now automated, removing the need for members to submit separate transfer applications.

If your passbook does not reflect the interest credit by July 20, 2026, members are advised to raise a grievance through the official EPFO Grievance Management System (EPFiGMS) for further assistance.
