We just can't stop raving about Sacred Games, can we? India's debut on Netflix for a series has met with widespread acclaim, from both Indian and International media. Directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, Sacred Games has Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte in the lead, with an ensemble supporting cast featuring Neeraj Kabi, Shalini Vatsa, Aamir Bashir, Kubbra Sait, Rajshri Despande, Luke Kenny, Jatin Sarna, Girish Kulkarni and Pankaj Tripathy among others. The first season has just concluded and we are quite excited for the commencement of the second one.

Now as you know Sacred Games is an adaptation of the book by the same name, authored by Vikram Chandra. This marks the second adaptation of a book by Bollywood this year, after Alia Bhatt's Raazi successfully made Harinder Sikka's Calling Sehmat into a movie. While adapting books into movies is a culture that Hollywood rigorously follows, here the practice is being slowly embraced (check Sonam Kapoor's The Zoya Factor, and Sushant Singh Rajput's The Fault in Our Stars remake). There are some very good, thrilling novels in India that deserves a screen adaption. Some of them are so epic that a mere two-hour big screen adaptation might not do justice. For such books, we need a treatment that Netflix has given Sacred Games.

Now that Sacred Games has been such a success, we would recommend Netflix (or any streaming service) to look at adapting these fives novels into web-series.

Chanakya Chant

Author: Ashwin Sanghi

Ashwin Sanghi is often called his fans as India's answer to Dan Brown. Sanghi is known for his multi-linear narrative, complex plots and meshing of historical events with the modern timeline. Not to forget, imbibing a sense of mystery in the proceedings. And Chanakya Chant is definitely one of his better works, that is in a similar vein as Sacred Games.

The Shiva trilogy

Author: Amish Tripathi

The Shiva trilogy is popular among the readers for humanising the legend of Lord Shiva. There were plans for Karan Johar to give a big screen adaptation, but it looks like that project is never going to happen. So why not Netflix take up the series? We do want a really good mythological series that cater the youngsters. And the material will lead to an epic feel!

Interpreter of Maladies

Author:  Jhumpa Lahiri

There are only a few writers who delve into complex human emotions with precision and perfection and Jhumpa Lahiri is one of them. Her most popular book, The Namesake, has already got a big screen adaptation. So maybe Netflix or any streaming could look at adapting the equally brilliant Interpreter of Maladies as an anthology series.

Shantaram

Author:  Gregory David Roberts

Technically, Shantaram is not an Indian book, as it is written by the Australian Gregory David Roberts, based on his adventures in Mumbai. But the city plays a major character in the book, just like in Sacred Games, and it features some colourful characters. The book was due for a movie adaptation, with Johnny Depp in the lead, and Amitabh Bachchan and Chunky Pandey in supporting roles. However, the project has been dropped since. Then in this, Apple Inc was looking to adapt the book as a TV series. Let's hope that happens!

A Suitable Boy

Author: Vikram Seth

One of the most epic novels written by an Indian author. With 1,349 pages, the book is considered as one of the longest English language novels ever published. With such diverse characters, rich setting (based around the Partition) and engaging subplots, A Suitable Boy has so much to offer for a web-series.
