Supreme Court today made a landmark decision that will be hailed by many who root for a free, democratic society for years ahead. The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, had neutralised the draconian Section 377 law that criminalised gay or unnatural sex. The court, while delivering their decision said, "Consensual sex between adults in a private space, which is not harmful to women or children, cannot be denied as it is a matter of individual choice. Section 377 results in discrimination and is violative of constitutional principles." This decision was met with cheers from many on social media. That is, except those with a homophobic nature. When it comes to Bollywood, one of the first celebs who lauded the verdict was Karan Johar. He tweeted, "Historical judgment!!!! So proud today! Decriminalising homosexuality and abolishing #Section377 is a huge thumbs up for humanity and equal rights! The country gets its oxygen back!" Section 377 Verdict: Karan Johar, Sonam Kapoor and Neha Dhupia Laud Supreme Court’s Decision.
However, the reactions to this tweet by some Twitter users showed why the SC verdict need to be considered as a landmark; they were deplorable and completely. Check out some of the vile reactions below -

But there were others who slammed the director for a completely different reason. They admonished him for showing the LGBT community in poor light by using gay caricatures for comedic purposes in the past. Some of the films that get the blame were Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dostana, and Student of the Year.
Consider this tweet an appeal from me now for better portrayal of the queer community in popular cinema so that generations growing up watching them develop empathy early on. https://t.co/me1jchmSPB

Now stop showing Homophobic comedy in your movies. Dostana, Kal Ho Na Ho, Student of the Year to name a few.

To be fair to Karan Johar, he also produced Kapoor & Sons that had one of the best portrayals of a homosexual individual in Hindi Cinema, played by Fawad Khan. It also took some time for Karan Johar to himself be open about his own sexuality, so let's give him a break here!
