What Did Swara Bhasker Say About ‘Padmaavat’ at Event?
Speaking at the "Woman Life Freedom" panel discussion at the India International Centre in Delhi, Bhasker revisited her long-standing critique of the climax scene in Padmaavat. Recalling her initial reaction to the film, she questioned the message the portrayal sends regarding female honour and sexual violence.
Bhasker stated that the scene left her feeling as though it suggested suicide was preferable to surviving sexual assault. She noted that the cinematic representation made her feel as if a survivor who did not take their own life to preserve honour was being portrayed as a coward. She highlighted a specific frame featuring a pregnant woman participating in the act, questioning why an unborn child's life should be surrendered. Her commentary sparked anger among several social media users, who accused her of mischaracterising historical sacrifices.
Fahad Ahmad Defends Swara Bhasker
Amid the growing online backlash, NCP-SP leader Fahad Ahmad stepped forward in support of his wife. Ahmad rejected the narrative being pushed against Bhasker, arguing that her remarks were being intentionally distorted or taken out of context.
Addressing the critics directly, Ahmad challenged detractors to show evidence that Bhasker had directly maligned historical women. He stated that if anyone could prove she intended to disrespect historical sacrifices, he and Bhasker would willingly face whatever consequence or punishment was deemed appropriate. He stressed that her focus was on the cinematic depiction and its modern implications rather than disparaging history.

Swara Bhasker's Clarification
Following the online debate, Bhasker issued a clarification regarding her statements at the panel. She maintained that her commentary was directed specifically at the artistic choices made in the 2018 film rather than the actual historical figures. Swara Bhasker Clarifies Remarks on ‘Padmaavat’ Jauhar Scene Amid Backlash.
Bhasker explained that her objection has always centred on the glorification of self-immolation on screen and how cinematic narratives link a woman’s worth strictly to concepts of physical purity. This aligns with an open letter she wrote to Sanjay Leela Bhansali shortly after Padmaavat's release in 2018. She emphasised that discussing the psychological impact of film scenes on modern audiences, particularly survivors of violence, should not be equated with dishonouring history.
