The internet is busy talking about the first teaser of the Netflix film, The Irishman. The crime drama directed by Martin Scorsese stars Robert Di Niro and Al Pacino in the lead roles. Since the plot of the film unfolds over decades, it required the actors to look younger. Enter, VFX. Robert and Al have been de-aged using cutting-edge technology. The visual effects are the reason why the total budget of the movie $200million, making it Scorsese's most expensive movie to date. Well, to watch the younger versions of Robert and Al, we say the money is well spent. The young version of Robert is quite the hot topic right now. But let us not forget that this is not the first time, the 'youngification' of an actor has taken place in a movie.

Here are some other examples in Hollywood when, de-ageing was employed to justify the plot of the film. God, bless those VFX angels making the world a better place for all of us. Also, check out our review of The Irishman here.

 X-Men: The Last Stand

One of the earliest examples of the de-ageing technique in movies is X-Men 3. Since the movie was released in 2006, and the tech was not as sophisticated back then, the job on Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen doesn't quite look perfect. Even worse is Patrick's de-ageing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Terminator Genisys

When Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the iconic role in the Terminator series, he had to be digitally de-aged to go at loggerheads with himself. The job was decent.

Ant-Man

For a small flashback sequence in the movie,  Michael Douglas was de-aged. Quite a spectacular job there. But again, if the VFX is not good in a Marvel film, then what is even the point it.

Captain America: Civil War

For a very tiny sequence, Robert Downey Jr appears on the screen as a teen. It was cool to watch. Other Marvel movies that de-aged characters for small sequences are Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Even DC used the tech on Nicole Kidman in Aquaman.

Captain Marvel

The first movie to heavily and extensively use de-ageing is Captain Marvel. Samuel L Jackson appears as a young Nick Fury for the entirety of this superhero film. It was pretty cool to watch.

Avengers: Endgame

For the Time Heist sequence, the movie travels back to 2012, and thus the characters were required to look a certain age. Enter, VFX. Actors were subtly de-aged by digital effects to properly match their past selves.

Gemini Man

The upcoming film directed by Ang Lee is one of the few movies to use VFX to de-age a character for the major part of the film. It is interesting to see Will Smith fight a younger Will Smith.
